『세이렌의 노래: 반짝이는 불협화음』은 이질적이지만 매혹 당할 수밖에 없는 세이렌과 오디세우스에 관한 신화에서 출발한다. 이 이야기에서 오디세우스는 낮의 질서와 빛을 강조한 동일성과 지배의 세계를 상징한다. 이와 반대로 세이렌은 타자를 의미하며, 낯선 곳으로 이끄는 매혹의 목소리이다. 세이렌의 노래가 오디세우스를 포함한 다른 선원에게 위험하다고 여겨지는 이유는 그녀의 목소리가 우리가 이해할 수 없는 언어로 되어 있기 때문이다. 사회 규칙, 질서, 규범에서 벗어난 세이렌의 목소리는 들리지 않고, 이해할 수 없는 것으로 우리에게 불필요하고 불편한 환대 받지 못한다. 세이렌은 비단 신화 속에만 존재하는 것은 아니다.//
작가는 거리를 걷고 이야기를 나누는 가장 작은 행위를 통해 장소에 개입을 시작한다. 이 과정에서 발견되는 사소한 것, 별 의미를 갖지 않다고 여겨지는 장소와 사물을 수집하고 기록하는 여정을 통해 작가는 일상에서 세이렌을 만나게 된다. 전근대적 공간인 옛 시장이나 오래된 집, 사라지는 소규모 가게들, 그리고 거리로 폐기되는 물품들까지 다양한 종류의 세이렌이 도시에 존재한다. 작가가 대전 원도심 거리에서 빈번하게 접한 세이렌은 경계 구조물들이다. 집이나 텃밭, 가게 앞에 놓인 콘크리트, 벽돌, 폐타이어, 양철통, 폐목재 등 산업폐기물로 구축된 구조물은 개인의 영역을 보호하는 경계로서 작용한다. 작가는 수호신이자 영역의 경계를 알리는 이러한 구조물과 대전에 유난히 편재되어 있는 토템의 기능과 목적에서 유사점을 찾고, 이들을 도시-토템이라고 부른다. 작가는 발견한 도시-토템의 기원과 의미를 추적하기 위해, 주민들과 대화를 통해 그들이 기억하고 경험한 이야기를 수집하게 된다. 이는 도시-토템은 단순한 사물이 아니라 사라져 가는 것을 지키고 유지하는 사람들 그 자체를 의미하게 된다. 그 결과 이들의 이야기는 원도심의 사물, 사람, 장소를 하나로 잇는 흐름을 구성하고, 그것들이 사라지는 죽음의 폭력으로부터 구하는 힘을 지닌다. 이 전시를 통해 작가는 유용성을 잃은 사물, 개인의 잊혀져 가는 기억, 그리고 사라지는 장소를 토대로 도시-토템을 만든다. 발췌된 이미지와 이야기는 비예측적인 우연성을 통해 변형, 해체와 재구축된다. 이러한 불확정성은 일상에 교란과 교섭을 일으켜 들리지 않았던 반짝이는 불협화음을 갖고 있는 세이렌의 노래를 소환해낼 것이다.//
I begin my involvement in a site by the simple act: walking down the street or having a conversation with the locals. I encounter the Sirens in her quotidian life through the journey of gleaning and documenting insignificant things and places she discovers during this process. A city contains different types of Sirens: old marketplaces, old houses, small shops, and abandoned articles. The Sirens she has often encountered in the streets of Daejeon's old downtown area are structures that work as boundaries. Built of concrete, bricks, waste tires, tin pails, discarded wood panels, and other industrial waste, these structures are placed near houses and vegetable gardens to perform as boundaries that separate and protect each individual's territory.
I try to explore similarities in function and purpose between such structures and totems that are pervasive in the Daejeon area. I call them urban-totems because these structures act like guardians as well as borders. I also collects stories and tales that residents remember through conversations with them in order to trace the origin and meaning of these urban-totems. Urban totems represent not merely objects but also local people who strive to keep and maintain life stories that are slowly disappearing. As a result, their stories help form a flow that connects people, places, and things of the old downtown area. This flow might have the strength to save them from the violence of death that is forcing them to fade away.
In this exhibition the artist presents urban totems based on objects that have lost their functions, the dimmed memories of individuals, and places that are erased by the massive urban redevelopment project. Extracted images and narratives are modified, deconstructed, and reconstructed through unpredictable contingencies. Such uncertainties will revive the Sirens' song with unheard, sparkling dissonances by arousing disturbances in our everyday lives.
